As part of the eCommerce Day World Tour 2024, the 2nd edition of the eCommerce Day East Africa Kenya took place, spanning three days of initiatives that brought together leaders from the public and private sectors to promote the development of digital commerce in East Africa.

Nairobi, Kenya – November 19, 2024

This event, organized by the eCommerce Institute, marks the 182nd edition globally, solidifying itself as a strategic platform for the professionalization, innovation, and growth of the digital ecosystem. During the opening ceremony, Marcos Pueyrredón, President of the eCommerce Institute, stated:

“East Africa is leading a digital revolution, and this event symbolizes the collective commitment to connect, inspire, and transform digital commerce. We believe this region has the potential to become a global model for inclusion and development through technology.”

Regarding the development of digital commerce in Kenya, it is important to note that the eCommerce Day East Africa Kenya 2024 arrives at a pivotal moment for Kenya, aligning its National E-commerce Strategy with East Africa’s regional strategy, the AfCFTA protocol, and the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

In this regard, Marcos Pueyrredón added:

“With mobile penetration projected to exceed 60% and an e-commerce market growing at an annual rate of 17.9%, the continent is positioning itself as a global leader in innovation and technological adoption. Spending through conversational commerce channels is expected to reach $43 billion by 2028, driven by tools like voice assistance, which already accounts for 26.1% of the market. Additionally, the use of artificial intelligence in e-commerce is projected to surpass $22 billion by 2032, demonstrating how this technology is key to optimizing customer experience and scaling operations. This growth also reflects a new generation of consumers — born between 1997 and 2012 — focusing on products like facial care, healthy snacks, and probiotics, which will dominate consumption by 2034. These data not only highlight Africa’s potential but also underline the necessary commitment to co-create an inclusive, sustainable, and competitive global ecosystem. Now is the time to lead this transformation.”

According to Principal Secretary of Trade Alfred K’Ombudo, Kenya projects its e-commerce volume will reach $3.5 billion by 2027, driven by improvements in digital infrastructure, online payment systems, and regulatory frameworks facilitating cross-border trade.

Key Highlights of the Event

The conference sessions focused on providing high-value content for the entire value chain: technology, payment methods, marketing, logistics, and marketplaces.
Innovative trends in e-commerce were explored, such as the advantages of artificial intelligence applied to digital strategies, the rise of interactive shopping, and the transformative impact of conversational commerce in retail. Discussions also included strategies for cross-border e-commerce success, the importance of diversity and inclusion in digital retail, and specific initiatives to boost e-commerce among young people (Vijana).

In addition to panels and keynote speeches featuring prominent industry leaders, startup competitions showcased the most innovative emerging companies in the sector, all within an environment fostering exclusive networking opportunities to encourage collaborations and new business ventures.

Inclusion and Sustainability as Pillars

Inclusion was a central theme of the event. Programs like the eWomen Networking Boost enabled the free participation of 92 women in this edition, promoting diversity within the digital ecosystem.

In the afternoon, Natalia Zuca, Director of International Strategies and Operations at the eCommerce Institute, stated:

“We believe knowledge empowers people, and people empower businesses. Our goal is for every participant to take away something valuable: an idea, a connection, or inspiration to transform their business and community.”

The event also reflected initiatives supported by strategic allies such as USAID, eTrade Alliance, and leading companies like VTEX and Microsoft, which have been instrumental in advancing digital commerce in East Africa.
